Twenty-four nations, all on one stage!

The final round of the "NEUE STIMMEN" International Singing Competition begins today in Gütersloh. The singers, who are staying at the Flussbett Hotel, gathered for an initial group photo, with a few stragglers expected tomorrow. "It's wonderful to experience how these next-generation talents, who have come here from around the world, all get along," said Liz Mohn, president of the competition, greeting the participants on their arrival. "Once again it's clear to see how music serves as a universal language, bringing together people of different backgrounds and cultures."

Today they will be rehearsing, with the competition's first recitals taking place tomorrow and on Wednesday. Those who make it to the semifinals will then perform on Friday in Gütersloh's municipal center. Only during the final concert on Saturday, October 31, 2009, will it become clear who has earned the right to be called a "new voice of 2009."

A total of 41 singers from 24 countries made it through this year's preliminary rounds, thereby qualifying to participate in these final rounds. Whether or not they will all appear on stage always remains a matter of speculation, right up to the last minute. "Illness, travel problems and other unexpected events always keep us running, down to the wire," says Ines Koring, who has served as competition's director at the Bertelsmann Stiftung since 2000. As always she's pleased at the considerable interest shown by agents and opera house managers. Some 70 have decided to attend this year, offering the young performers excellent prospects for boosting their fledgling careers.

Anyone wanting to get an impression of what the singers can do is welcome to attend the semifinals on Friday. A limited number of tickets is still available for €20.70 at the Gütersloh municipal center (Stadthalle) box office.
