Woo-Kyung Kim has been a pupil of Rita Hirner-Lill at Munich's Academy of Music and Drama since the winter semester 2000/2001, having spent the four years prior to that at Seoul's Hanyong University. After singing the part of Don Ottavio in a 1998 production of "Don Giovanni" at the National Theater in Seoul, he went on to win first prize in the Jungang Ilbo Competition 1999, also held in the Korean capital.

Not only did Woo-Kyung Kim come second in "Neue Stimmen" 2001, but that year also saw him winning first prize in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna and second prize in the Competizione dell'Opera at the Semper Opera in Dresden. His rendering of Cassio in Verdi's "Otello" at the Dresden Music Festival 2002 earned him considerable acclaim and since then, he has made guest appearances at both the International Music Festival in Speyer Cathedral and at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. He also won first prize in the Francisco Viñas International Competition 2002 in Barcelona. In 2003, Woo Kyung-Kim is to take up a permanent engagement with the Semper Opera in Dresden.
