René Pape studied singing under Heidi Petzold at the Academy of Music in Dresden and is a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor. He won first prize in the 1987 International Dvorák Competition in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) and again came first in the 1989 Mirjam Helin Competition in Helsinki. René Pape took up his first engagement at the Berlin Staatsoper in1988.

René Pape is still a member of the ensemble of Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden where, under the baton of Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta, he has had a chance to sing all the great bass parts in the repertoire. He has made regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival, most recently as Sarastro in 2002. From 1994 to 1998, he sang the part of Fasolt at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth and has delighted audiences as far afield as New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Paris, Madrid, Geneva and Tokyo. He has also made a name for himself as a concert performer and oratorio soloist and has been involved in countless radio and CD productions. In 2003, he can be heard in productions of "The Magic Flute", "Marriage of Figaro" and "Macbeth" at the Staatsoper in Berlin, in "Meistersinger" and "Parsifal" at the New York Met and in "Lohengrin" at London's Covent Garden.
