Sonia Zlatkova attended a high school for the musically gifted in Varna and went on to study singing under Prof. Rajna Michajlova at the Academy of Music in Sofia. Her first breakthrough came in 1989, when she won first prize in the Maria Callas Singing Competition in Athens and was promptly offered an engagement at the National Opera House in Sofia.

Having won first prize in "Neue Stimmen" 1991, Sonia Zlatkova spent the years 1992 to 1995 at the Opera House in Dortmund. Her CD recordings with the Dortmund Philharmonic also date from this period. In 1995, she switched to the Theater Graz, where in the 2002/2003 season she can be heard in "L'elisir d'amore", "Don Giovanni", "Semele", "Don Carlos" and "Peter Grimes", Besides performing at the Bregenz Festival, Sonia Zlatkova has also made numerous guest appearances in Stuttgart, Vienna, Dresden, Essen, Saarbrücken, St. Gallen, Liège and Frankfurt.
