1st Prize
Gwyn Hughes Jones
Great Britain, tenor, born 1969
This is how he introduced himself at "Neue Stimmen" 1995:
After having years of singing lessons with Pauline Desch, Gwyn Hughes Jones continued his vocal training under David Pollard at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is currently a member of London's National Opera Studio. He won second prize at the inaugural Jussi Björling Tenor Competition in Sweden and will be taking up his first professional engagement with the Welsh National Opera later this year.
What is said about him today:
Gwyn Hughes Jones made his operatic debut in 1995 at the Welsh National Opera, an ensemble to which he still has close ties. He was a finalist in the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and, thanks to a number of performances on both radio and television, has acquired considerable acclaim outside Wales as well. He has sung at the Salzburg Festival and at countless European and American opera houses. 2002 saw him playing the part of Ernesto in "Don Pasquale" at the Florida Opera as well as that of Fenton in a production of "Falstaff" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His engagements for 2003 include productions of "Werther" at the Opéra National de Lyon and "L'elixir d'amore" at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff.
